Our local gaming store/group decided to do the Border Princes Campaign, using 1500 point army lists. There are currently 7 participants, two Dark Elf forces, a Vampire Counts army, a Ork and Gobbo army, a High Elf army, and an Empire army. For Varieties sake, I chose to use my Dogs of War army, la Compagnie della quattro croce.
4 August 2004: last night we just started grabbing territories. I got a decent starting position ,and advanced into the Aldium region as well as both sides of the Central Blood River.
Below is a map of my current territories, look for an update about once a week. The camp at the bottom is my HQ, and the army banners, are, well, my army banners.
I - La compagnia di Cavaliero nero
II - La torretta di soldi
III - Terza forza di Excursionary
IV - Bandiera di bianco
V - Soldati dell'oro
VI - Sesta Brigata
Week 1:
Week 2: (11 August 2004)
The Company moved into three more territories, expanding our realm to nine, and allowing us another banner, il Bandiera di bianco (IV). A lucrative alliance contract was signed with the Bretonians (dark blue), and payment was received from the Dark Elves to our east (black). Due to continued poor performance by the Black Baron, his services as operational general have been cancelled, and a new individual will be commanding the company next week.
Offers were also extended and accepted by the Cursed Company and Leopold's Leopard Company, whom we hope to see bolstering our ranks next week. Riders are currently also searching for Bronzino and his Galloper Guns to replace our existing cannon.
While we saw no campaign related combat this week, the Central South Road and Old Silk crossroad to our northwest saw a vicious battle between Dark Elves and High Elves (pale blue), resulting in a narrow High Elf victory. Elsewhere, spies indicated that a bitter fight was occurring along the southern bank of the East Blood river between the Orks and the Dark Elves.
Finally, scouts identified a legion of the undead (gray) advancing along the central section of the Old Silk road.
Week 2: (18 August 2004)
The Company moved into three more territories, expanding our realm to eleven, The second company, La torretta di soldi advanced into territory 59, but was completely repulsed by a horde of undead that flowed into the woods from the road. Despite the addition of the Cursed Company, Leopold's Leapord Company, a halfling hot pot, and our new General, Il ratto dorato, the company fell to tremendous losses and was forced to pull back into territory 69. While not a good start for our new general, current camp rumors indicate that non less than Golfargs's Ogres are en route to support him.
The first company, La compagnia di Cavaliero nero fortified territory 58, and the third and fourth companies moved unopposed into territories 89 and 91. Now fully aware of the threatening undead, banner movement will be clear to move up and remove this foul taint.
Week 3: (25 August 2004)
The Company only gained one new territory this week, moving into the bridgehead across the Blood River. We traded territories with the vampire army, and the third company, la Terza forza di Excursionary, moved up to head off the vampire army working it's way through the forest.
The High Elf player faced a brutal defeat at the hands of the Bretonians for control of the old silk road, and also lost Tor Anrok in a narrow defeat by the northern Dark Elf forces. Due to his losses, (and more importantly real life concerns) The High Elf force has withdrawn. In similar developments, the Empire Army has also withdrawn from the region.
As we had no official combats, we skirmished for sport against the Vampire army, and this time won an overwhelming victory. The roster included Golgfag's Ogres and the Giants of Albion, and these heavy hitters managed to tie up the undead units long enough for Leopold's Leapord Company and the Cursed Company to crush the remaining forces. In a battle highlight, Kreuger of the Cursed Company struck a killing blow against the Vampire during a challenge fight.
The result of all of this support is that we will be able to field a force of 2100 pts; well over the 1500 of the Vampires. This will be a do or die battle for us, if we cannot defeat the Vampires at this time, our headquarters will be in jeopardy. If we do defeat the army, the Vampire banner will scatter, and return to his HQ. This battle will occur before next tuesday, probably over the labor day weekend.Week 4: (31 August 2004)
The Company moved to cut off the Vampire army running amuck in our territory; the first, second, and fourth companies moved to support the third that managed to cross the river in good form, and met the Vampires head on.
We tried a few force options out against the gobbos for fun, and despite being 500 points over the greenskins, it was a close draw. Not a good start. With the points available, it is certain that the two giants will definitely be fielded. Stay tuned!
Battle results - Despite being over 700 points larger than the ethereal host, the company could only post a tie against the Vampires. Regardless of this pathetic outcome, the end result was the same - the Vampire Banner, unable to retreat into friendly territory, was scattered, and the territory remains in DoW control. Note that the 4th company, which fought the vile undead, retreated back across the central blood river. So while battle tactics failed us, overall army tactics proved decisive.
Week 5: (7 September 2004)
Due to a failure in payment for services rendered over the past two weeks, the Company moved into two differerent neighboring Dark Elf territories. Due to lack of accurate scouting, we are unsure if the a battle will need to be fought in order to secure those zones.
Elsewhere, the Bretonnians lost the crossroads along the old silk road to another Vampire army, despite our fourth company providing crossbow support. The good news is the company will be fielding a new banner, Soldati dell'oro, whose support will be sorely needed. With this banner comes Halfling arches, the Bearmen, and a Dragon lord.
Week 6: (14 September 2004)
The Dark Elf failure to pay was an indicator of that realms collapse, as the entire eastern DE realm faded into history. Their void was quickly filled by eager hoards of Orks and Goblins, that swarmed over the empty terrain.
The third company fortified the bogs due reports of rampaging green skins, and the second company moved into occupy the castle town of Malko. Supported by the first company who moved onto the central old silk road, the fourth company assaulted the Vampire army that was hastily digging in on the cross roads.
Despite being ill-advised, our Bretonnian contractors requested the attack, and provided us with desperately needed support. Despite this, the fourth company was outnumbered, and quickly overwhelmed, slaughtered to the man, The banner lost and disbanded, an new fourth company being currently formed at our headquarters. Last reports showed the undead continuing to fortify the cross roads against further attack, and spies report that their victory was aided by the Northwestern Dark Elf contingent, who apparently feared a similar retribution by the Vampires.
In the face of this defeat, the newly formed fifth company advanced to the lower bridgehead, nervous after receiving reports of the fourth's crushing defeat, but taking up a blocking position. The only other bright side was the taking of Malko and the road has allowed the company to form a 6th banner, il Sesta Brigata, desperately needed as we are now pressed on two fronts.
Week 7: (21 September 2004)
The situation is becoming increasingly dire in our fight against the Vampires. The first company was crushed on the old silk road by a massive undead force of 2150 points, well out massing our combined 1800 point list. Despite a better contest, thanks in part to the Dragon Lord, Lumpin Crook, and the bearmen who recently arrived, the end was the same - our banner scattered.
To the east, rapid marching greenskins advanced much faster than expected, and have cut unopposed towards our base camp. Thanks to the vicious defeat by the vampires, the first company will be re-forming there just in time to take the brunt of the ork hoarde. Despite our desire to continue the fight against the undead, necessity requires moving armies back to defend our coffers.
Week 8: (28 September 2004)
The company enjoyed a brief respite from the undead, and instead pivoted to deal with the green skin invasion. The 4th company crushed an invading ork army and threw them back, enableing them to fortify their territory. The first company, still reeling from it's earlier defeat, was unable to duplicate the effort, and was pushed back to the edge of the central blood river.
This close to our headquarters, it's time to go on the offensive!
Week 9: (5 October 2004)
Surprisingly, the one ork force that was beaten last week continuted to retreat into his own territory. The other one attempted to wrest the fortified territory away from the recently victorious 6th company. Supported by the 3rd and the 1st companies, the Sesta Brigata threw back the assaulting greenskins with a solid victory.
Our headquarters no longer under immediate threat, we will continue to push the greens back in the south. But we now need to address concerns on our nothern border, as the vampire forces gather to lay siege to Malko. The question is do we have enough time to get our relief forces in place?
Campaign End: (27 October 2004)
Due to a variety of reasons, the campaign ended a bit prematurely. Still not a bad thing, for we still held Malko, resulting in a Dogs of War Victory! Huzzah!
