Flames of War

Road to Cairo

After Action Report

Our mission objectives were simple - 1, take a fuel dump. 2, advance off the table. 3. Destroy 2/3rds of their army. The results? No objectives completed.

The game had some clever rule sets that mimicked fuel shortages for the Axis forces; these played a significant role, and helped slow down our advance. The Axis loss was in no small part due to the failure of our armor to smash through the initial line of defending British armor. In fact, by the end of the game, there was still one grant from the original group left on the table! Our plan was for the armor to smash through, and have the motorzed infantry swing wide, and than come back in to support the tanks as we approached the objective.

With the armor tied up, my trucks out of gas, and my infantry facing tanks without any anti-armor of their own, well they got stuck and dug in. Nothing like outrunning your own armor!

The game was still up in the air though, until British re-inforcements showed up. Another 8 Grants; we called the game as the Axis forces simply didn't have the resources to deal with that force.

Initial deployment. My Panzergrenadier platoons each occupy one truck, while the Nebelwerfers prepare their bombardment.
Italian forces were in the center, while Panzer's covered the left side.
Facing the pintail attack were no less than 8 Grants.
My mortar platoon set up on the ridge to offer some initial smoke cover.
The trucks race forward, good sand conditions allowing for very fast movement.
The Nebelwerfers fire

While their compatriots race up the table, the mortar platoon begins slogging it up the ridge.
Axis forces out ran their support, and the Nebelwerfers load up to advance behind their lines.
Out of gas! With a fuel shortage, the panzergrenadier platoons get stalled.
And are forced to unload and advance on foot.
The nebelwerfers finally unload, and take up positions to fire.
